Why this workshop?

Koha is the world’s leading open-source Integrated Library System (ILS) and a strong candidate for unified, interoperable library automation across institutions. This hands-on series will help participants plan, deploy, and manage Koha for end-to-end library operations—from acquisition to OPAC discovery—aligned with the spirit of “One Nation, One Software.”

Key Learning

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand Koha architecture, modules, MARC frameworks, and circulation policies
  • Install Koha (Linux stack), configure basic/advanced system preferences
  • Set up Patron categories, Item types, Circulation & Fine rules, Notices/Slips
  • Perform cataloguing (MARC21), batch operations, authority control
  • Manage Acquisitions, Serials, and Reports (SQL)
  • Configure OPAC look-and-feel, facets, and integrations (Z39.50/SRU)
  • Handle backup/restore, upgrades, performance tuning, and security basics
  • Plan multi-library setups and migration from legacy systems

Day-wise Outline (90 minutes each)

  1. Introduction & Installation: Koha overview, use cases, server prerequisites, package install
  2. System Preferences & Administration: Global settings, libraries, branches, user roles
  3. Patrons & Circulation: Categories, issuing rules, fines, notices, self-check options
  4. Catalogue & MARC: Frameworks, authority control, batch import/export (CSV/ISO2709)
  5. Acquisitions: Budgets, funds, vendors, baskets, orders, receiving & invoicing
  6. Serials Management: Subscriptions, patterns, routing lists, claims
  7. Reports & Analytics: SQL report builder, common MIS queries, scheduling
  8. OPAC & Discovery: Theming, facets, advanced search, Z39.50/SRU targets
  9. Data Migration & Integrations: From legacy ILS, email
  10. Maintenance, Security & Scaling: Backups, upgrades, performance, multi-branch

Certification

Participants attending at least 80% of sessions and completing assignments will receive an e-Certificate.
